Our VAST Challenge Award

Dashboard to detect disease outbreak

The VAST Challenge is a data visualization contest that occurs every year as part of the IEEE VisWeek Conference. This year’s challenge dealt with three datasets: illegal arms trading, hospitalization records, and gene mutation. We chose to address hospitalization records and visualizing the spread of a pandemic.

Not surprisingly, the bulk of the work was cleaning up and organizing the data. Records from disparate entities tend to have little resemblance to one another. Unfortunately, this means that analysis of data across these entities is time consuming, if feasible at all.

We looked at ways to enable early detection of epidemics and .... read on ›

Coffee Bean – An Excellent Use of Twitter

I first tweeted that I was craving a Moroccan Mint Late from The Coffee Bean, a treat I haven't had in almost a decade

Today, it’s almost essential for a business to have an online presence: not just a website, but to tap into social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. It’s a lot more work to keep up on these services than most businesses realize or have time for, often resulting in haphazard sites, messy marketing, and poor interactions with clients. Unfortunately, as a consumer, I almost never receive a reply to my comments. Occasionally, a business will respond with, “Thanks for the feedback!” But it feels more like a stock response that could easily be substituted with, “Thanks for signing up!” or, “Thanks for filling out the form!” So you .... read on ›
